Spyke WiFi Robot Lets You Spy On Your Pets

Spyke

Meccano is (arguably) 100 years old this year, and they’re taking a major step into the future (or, maybe, the present) with Spyke, a WiFi enabled robot. Spyke is fully controllable over the internet, and features an onboard video camera, microphone, and speakers. And oh, hey, wouldn’t it be great if Spyke could use Skype? Well it would and, guess what, he can; the bot can be used as a VoIP phone with services like GTalk or Skype. The 15fps 320×240 camera isn’t the greatest, but it’s plenty to tell the difference between your cats when you’re checking up on them from the office. Spyke also includes some sentry software that will email you a picture whenever he detects movement, and is smart enough to find his way back to his charging station when he gets low on juice.

Like any Meccano creation, some assembly is required, but you can change Spyke’s configuration and even add other Meccano parts. His software is open source, so hopefully he’ll be at least a little bit hackable. Add a flamethrower or a railgun, and he’ll be ready for some serious security duty. You can see Spyke in action (sort of) on YouTube as long as you can forgive the guy shooting the video for confusing R2-D2 with C-3PO. Spyke is on pre-order now (delivery in October) for $200.00.

COME ON!
My dog would rip the arms off this thing, hump it, and have it in tiny shards within an hour after unboxing.
