Chinese Robot Cook Makes More Than Ramen

This innovatively titled “Food Robot,” created by retired Beijing professor Liu Changfa, is a 5 foot tall computerized kitchen, capable of executing hundreds or thousands of recipes. It has a pot and an induction cooker in its belly (how appropriate), and a touchscreen in its chest that’s programmable by a child. Just tell the robot what you want, and it’ll whip it up using its robotic arm in some unspecified manner. “It would take only a few minutes for the computer-based robot to cook a delicious meal for me with well-prepared foods, vegetables and meats,” Changfa says. But that makes me wonder exactly what the robot is capable of… If it just cooks, that’s not such a big deal, because (as far as I can tell from microwaving corn dogs, which is about the limit of my skills in the kitchen) the real chore of cooking comes from the prep and the clean up. Whatever the specific methodology employed, though, the robot apparently does a good job. Taste testers in Changping say: “all the foods are as delicious as that made by a well-trained chef.” Food Robot will be going to China’s national invention contest this month to try to make a tasty impression on commercial producers.
