SmartPal V Cleans Your House, Looks Menacing

Yasukawa Electric Corporation’s SmartPal V has some pretty mad skills… Using hands with nine joints and three fingers, it can perform a wide variety of household tasks the same way a human would if we weren’t so lazy. It can navigate, detect objects, follow commands, and watch you while you sleep. Plus, it molests panda bears, as you can see from this demo video courtesy Robot Watch:
SmartPal V is intended specifically for the non-industrial service industry, so you might expect to see it in commercial settings, offices, and eventually maybe even in your home. Watching you. While you sleep.

It’s a very talkative robot. Not as practical for floor cleaning as a roomba, but maybe promising as a general purpose form factor. It could be made to look less menacing simply by changing the appearance of the head cameras. Also, when robots like this start to appear in homes and offices you can bet that users will want to dress them up, just like in the Asimov stories.
