T-34 SecurityBot Fires Nets At Intruders Via Cellphone [Update: Video]

T-34

This little Tmsuk T-34 (no relation, unfortunately) security robot, jointly developed by a Japanese robotics company and a Japanese security firm, is designed to replace human security guards in corporate environments. It’s basically a little remote controlled car, controllable through a video camera via a cellphone. The T-34 is equipped with microphones and body heat sensors and can zip along at 10 kph, and if it finds a perp doing something naughty, it can fire a net at them. And then, it can… Um… Hm.

T-34

Admittedly, I’ve never had a net fired at me. But while I can see it being a significant inconvenience in the short term, what does the T-34 do after the bad guy gets out of the net? Does it fire another net? I mean, isn’t the whole point of the T-34 that you don’t have to have a human security guard? And in that case, wouldn’t you want something a little more, uh, incapacitating than a net gun? Like, a tranquilizer gun, or a taser shotgun.

Update: Impress Robot Watch has video:

The Tmsuk T-34 should be for sale in about 2 years for about $9000, and Tmsuk says there is a home security version in the works.

Ridiculous. With nobody around, the net does no good.
