Android-Controlled Forknife Robot

It’s obviously not an actual android, but this little robot is being controlled by Android, Google’s open source software platform for mobile phones. The awesome thing about Android is that it allows users to access their cell phones as little portable computers, instead of just as phones that are able to run some specific software. Furthermore, they’re little portable computers with integrated accelerometers, Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, GPS, a camera, audio… All kinds of tasty little features to play with.

Android supports programs written in Java and C (sort of), and with a little bit (or kind of a lot) of hardware and software tweaking, Jeffery Nelson was able to get it to control his Forknife robot using his T-Mobile G1. Although it’s ingenious, Jeffery readily admits that he just did this for fun and there’s certainly room for improvement. You can download his open source RoboComm and RoboServer software (it’s in Java) from his website, here.
