Video Wednesday: The Best Cars Are Untouched By Humans
Writing by Evan Ackerman on Wednesday, 25 of March , 2009 at 1:26 am
Remember waaaay back when “handmade” meant “high quality?” Nowadays, it’s robots that are synonymous with speed and precision, and at this Audi A4 plant, it shows, as there is nary a human to be seen. The robots are all reportedly all Kukas, which is fine, but I keep wanting there to be some kind of ultimate showdown between a Kuka robot arm and an ABB robot arm for ultimate industrial bot dominance.
Oh, and just for the record, the best cars aren’t Audis. They’re 1994 Volvo station wagons.

Thanks for the video. I saw these robots live. Quite impressive.
BTW, it’s not an Audi plant, but the BMW plant in Munich, Germany.

I don’t think handmade always meant high quality, rather than “personal”. Machines are way more accurate.

There is a rumor the BMW is completely automating ALL of it’s plants. Booting people and unions out of the business entirely. So when ten or so years up the road when the cars are completely robotic as well, the old joke of robots building robots will no longer be a joke. By that time the only jobs will be programmer or burger flipper. Wait. Burger flipper will be robotic as well…
