Micromouse Design Presentations From Minos 2009

The Minos 2009 micromouse competition (more on micromice here) in the UK last weekend also featured a bunch of different presentations on micromouse design theory and practice. Topics included navigation, sensors, control and communications, strategy, and even some updates on a vision-guided mouse, which (and I’m totally going out on a limb here) could be a huge advantage if the mouse was able to see down diagonals or something. Anyway, descriptions and a lot the media (including vids) from these presentations is available online for your edification here.
The picture above, btw, is a neat visual explanation of how a micromouse ‘thinks.’ Click on it for a full size version. I found it on the British Amateur Electronics Club website here.

The real advantage from using cameras on your mouse come from being able to look over walls at what might be in the next row over. There is no height limit in the micromouse competition.

Really? I would have thought that that would be cheating, or something… Why not just build a mast to get a picture of (hypothetically) the entire maze, and solve it that way?

I’ll gear this review to two kinds of folks: existing Zune homeowners who will be contemplating an upgrade, and men and women wanting to determine amongst a Zune and an iPod. (You’ll find other gamers value thinking about on the market, much like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this offers you ample info to generate an informed choice of your Zune vs gamers apart from the iPod line as well.)
