World’s Smallest Voice Controlled Robot

National Cheng Kung University has come out with what they’re calling the world’s smallest voice activated (humanoid?) robot. The 15 centimeter tall bot (waaay bigger than these) is a modified GeStream BeRobot with 16 degrees of freedom, an integrated camera, and software that can interpret instructions in several languages and perform “thousands” of actions. It’s also able to be programmed, so you can actually do what you’re supposed to do with robots.
Now, I guess there are two ways of looking at this… A voice controlled hobby robot could potentially get more people interested in hobby robotics since you don’t have to learn how to write code. On the other hand, the ability of a robot to run a program is one of the things that makes robots (hobby or otherwise) so interesting to play with and so capable, since you can get them to do pretty much whatever you want that they are physically capable of and you’re not constrained to a predefined set of command/action pairs. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for voice control of robots. It’s just that when it comes to using robots in an educational environment (which is what these are designed for), I hope students can come to appreciate the programming aspects of robotics instead of relying too heavily on the voice control.

I think the whole slogan of “world’s smallest voice-activated robot” is just to help them stay in the Guinness Book (the BeRobot is already listed as the world’s smallest biped robot) in the event of any future competition.
