There isn’t too much info on this yet, but apparently a movie adaptation of the 1921 Czech play “Rossum’s Universal Robots” by Karel ─îapek will be released sometime in 2011 from Helicon Arts and director James Kerwin. R.U.R. is notable for the fact that it introduced the word “robot,” although the robots in the play are more like Six than Data: they’re biological constructions, not mechanical ones.

R.U.R. may not feature mechanical robots, but the plot is a modern one, about whether constructed beings have rights, and what happens when they decide to take matters into their own hands. It’ll be interesting to see how closely the movie is based on the play, and what side it takes: will the robots be dangerous rebels, or valiant freedom fighters?
