Solar Spiderbot Is Destined To Live On The Beach

According to Make, this solar powered walker (with obstacle avoidance, it looks like) has something to do with Theo Jansen’s Strandbeests, which we covered on OhGizmo back in 2007. It walks the same, anyway, except it uses the sun instead of the wind for power. And it’s way, way smaller. Here’s the original wind powered version:

Really big one, after the jump.

Theo Jansens creatures are absolutely amazing. The cool thing is how mechanical and organic they are…

As a side note, I’m not sure if the thing in the first video really has obstacle avoidance. The guy is saying (translated from Dutch):
“Hello. There are some terrible problems with the code. Well, it should work normally but the servos are interpreting it wrong. And that’s really too bad.”

Oh, okay… There are some ultrasonic sensors under there, so I figured that they were doing something. Guess they’re not quite working yet, though.
