High Speed Robot Hands Easily Outpace Humans
Writing by Evan Ackerman on Thursday, 30 of July , 2009 at 3:01 am
Those baseball playing robots we watched in action on Monday utilize 1000 FPS cameras and high speed motors to duplicate (and improve upon) what humans can do. But the system is capable of much more than just baseball… This video showcases just some of the talents of these robots, and it’s clearly way beyond what we’re capable of in both speed and precision.

Peter Griffin: Oh, my God. high-speed hands. We must keep this from the robots, lest they gain awareness and threaten the landed gentry.
ps. this is absolutely incredible.
pps. let’s see them do jazz hands. then i’d be really impressed.

There is a better video (from ICRA 2009 robotics conference) over on Hizook.com — http://www.hizook.com/blog/2009/08/03/high-speed-robot-hand-demonstrates-dexterity-and-skillful-manipulation

This video makes it to YouTube, where my cousin sees it, who emails the link to me because she knows I work in a robotics lab. The funny thing is, she didn’t know that we have this very same system. There must have been a media demo that sparked the recent coverage, but these hands have been around a while. (Namiki, IROS’03)
Prof. Namiki is now at Chiba University and I think his group is going to have the robot play air hockey next. Watch for updates on his website.
