Robotic Greenhouse Concept Would Give Plants The Run Of Mars

“Le Petit Prince” is a little robotic greenhouse that’s one of the finalists in Electrolux’s 2009 Design Lab competition. The concept is cool (if not entirely practical): each plant gets its own little robot, which seeks out whatever nutrients and other resources the plant needs… But it really should win just because of the artwork:

The artwork is slightly disturbing. In a “We will take over the world using our blade-like feet to slice you to bits.” way, with the single glowing red eye. Maybe if they made the eye a different colour, like blue, it might be a bit less creepy.

I can’t help hearing this idea of a robotic gardener without thinking about Huey, Dewey and Louie from the classic film Silent Running. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067756/)

Although this robot gardener idea seems to have taken on a kind of cyborg like cyber-plant direction. Part robot part plant. I guess that maybe a possible way to do it in the distant future, although surely a Silent Running style large greenhouse with robots tending to all the plants would be far more practical. As soon as they create robot gardeners, I’ll have to get three of them :)

I’ve got to disagree. While the idea has merit, the execution seems painfully weak.
