OmniZero.9 Is Three Kinds Of Awesome

Writing by Evan Ackerman on Monday, 28 of September , 2009 at 3:08 am

The ROBO-ONE humanoid robot competition was held in Toyoma, Japan last weekend, and by all accounts (sigh, I need a travel budget) Takeshi Maeda’s OmniZero.9 totally stole the show, and you can see why. I don’t know what kind of servos that thing is using, but I need some to debone my hot dogs.

Of course, OmniZero.9 wasn’t the only cool robot at RoboONE… Lem over at Robots-Dreams has put together a few more (non-embeddable) YouTube vids of the highlights:

Kinopy plays the xylophone

I’ve been blogging about OmniZero.9 for the past month and its great to finally see him compete! He totally trounced his competition in the ring. The only sad thing is how quickly his robots get retired. OmniZero 2 was one of the coolest ROBO-ONE competitors I’ve ever seen, yet it hardly got much action. At least people can still see his older robots at Vstone’s store.

Three types of awesome indeed – and extra helpings of each. I bet the use of the wheel mode would greatly increase the range of travel per charge and duration of use. With new materials becoming available and several exciting battery technologies in various stages of development it could mean that the range of tasks that can be automated is about to expand significantly.

I especially like his arm swords. They may not be that functional given their angle but they are great for showing celebration and causing fear in the enemy.

Thats very impressive. I especially like how it turned into a chair (at first I wondered what it was doing as it looked like it was opening up). Its amazing its got the strength to lift someone as well as itself.
