60 Minutes Report On DEKA Prosthetic Arm
Writing by Evan Ackerman on Tuesday, 29 of September , 2009 at 3:14 am
CBS has an interesting (and comprehensive) video and accompanying article on DEKA’s robotic prosthetic arm, commonly known as the “Luke” arm. We’ve written about it several times, and while this video doesn’t get into the coolest stuff (the brain control), it’s still worth a watch… If for no other reason than it’s great to see that innovative and effective cybernetics are finally getting to the people who need them the most.

The control system is modular. Eventually, they hope to have the brain control as an option (and they’ve tested it successfully), but at the moment, it’s more straightforward to just have the toe controls.

Surely having an opposable thumb makes us a primate? We’re not the only species to have that hand dexterity.

Had DEKA Robotics made any progress in making a prosthetic for persons with HD (Hip Disarticulation? My left limb was amputated in November of 2003; my current prosthetic is very heavy and uncomfortable. Also I have to take the entire thing off to use the restroom.
