Robot Pillow Makes Me Uncomfortable

Writing by Evan Ackerman on Wednesday, 7 of October , 2009 at 12:51 am

I’m all for emotional support robots, especially soft and fluffy ones that look like baby seals. This robot pillow, though, goes a little too far. It’s called Funktionide, and was designed by Stefan Ulrich after a two month research project by our favorite German bio-inspired robotics company, Festo.

The “Funktionide” is an autarkic amorph object whose intention is to provide the user with a atmosphere of presence thus counteracting the feeling of loneliness.

Firstly, if this thing crawled into bed with me, it would cure my loneliness but probably not with a sense of what you’d call relief. Maybe, terror. And secondly, inventing words isn’t fair.

Ok to be fair I think that’s probably one of the most original robots I’ve ever seen but OMG what were they thinking. That is just so wrong in so many ways! Now I’m going to be having nightmares tonight, that I will wake up and find this thing trying to absorb me to grow even larger!

Yes it is creepy but i can see where he was going. I work with children and from the eyes of a child a pillow who loves you is almost as good…or potentially as good, as a favored blankie. It really could help with children who suffer from night terrors.

Umm, you DO see that this is just a bunch of stills with some added image distortion to make it look like it’s moving, right?

I call Shenanigans
Correct me if i am wrong but isn’t that just a weird looking normal pillow and not a robot at all, and they are just taking still pictures and using the warp tool on them to make them look like they move.
Its like showing a video of still images of a flying car model with the strings edited out and calling it an invention or a design.

It looks like Bud Bundy is no longer a lonely boy.

For me to think it is real, I need a real video, not stop motion. In any event, this is good for little kids maybe, but not for adults. It is a tad to creepy.

Am i the only one who saw that this was simply a collection of stills with some VERY basic Photoshop distortion effects added? Seriously, you can see the dudes arm bending at sick angles st times. Maybe i missed the point, but at any rate, crappy PS skills, and a creepy damned pillow have wasted 3 minutes of my time.

To anyone who has ever had a bad breakup(im talking years of living together) or has had a husband or wife taken away from them. This just might be the thing to help get over the depression… Sleeping alone was the worst part for me, this might just help make the bed seem less empty…

Creepy as hell. I totally want one. Needs to be fuzzier, though, so it doesn’t look so much like a stupid… err… sex toy. Oh, and seriously, Photoshop sucks, as do the editor’s skills. Get a real program like GIMP, and you can actually make the warping look realistic with the click of a button.

I’d suggest you get a cat instead. They’ll sleep with you and play with you, and they’re unlikely to crawl across your face and smother you in the middle of the night. OTOH, glue a “Fleshlight” and a dildo onto that thing, and you’ve got yourself a serious sex toy…

Comment by Hunter

Made Friday, 27 of November , 2009 at 11:56 pm

The first time I watched it, the motion completely fooled me, though after reading the comments and watching a bit more closely, the warping technique is very prevalent. Still, it’s a cool idea. I wasn’t creeped out by it, it made me want one.

I don’t know. There’s that idea of something that is there to comfort you no matter what, only there for your needs, loves you unconditionally… I know a lot of people who want that. They have dogs, cats, whatever. False or not, I can see where it would be an accepted idea. We want robots even if we don’t admit it. We want robots who will work for us without question. We want robots who will tell us what we want to hear. We want robots who will breathe and comfort us. Think about it. False or not, this would so be accepted by humans because humans want humans to be that which they aren’t…robots.

Now the robot/cyborg/look-alikes comes in.
This little robot is actually very impressive, but the fact it doesn’t show expressions might make one a bit concerned. Not me.
I think of robots for what they do/feel/sense/etc and NOT how greatly they can mimic human expressions; THAT’s creepy. For f*** sake, it’s a ROBOT! Not as in Robocop, but as in eletronic circuits that do something defined by humans. I find the argument “[...] amorph object whose intention is to provide the user with a atmosphere of presence thus counteracting the feeling of loneliness” 110% valid.
It is just like a jello that “likes” cuddling, but doesn’t have a specific look.
I want one.

Made Tuesday, 15 of December , 2009 at 2:41 pm

Honestly, this made me really sad. Is it a funny robot design? Yeah, it is – and i chuckled at the “sex toy” comments and “Blob” comments and whatnot… But! What does it represent? It represents the fact that our society is degenerating to the point that people are so alone and depressed that they would love to hug a pillow that hugged them back. So many people I know just hole themselves up in their houses – barely go out – barely have friends… these are truly bleak times :( the Funktionide is a strange idea to solve a very real problem.

Wake up everyone!! We need to start talking to each other again!!

.) There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
