Breaking News: Barack Obama Worried About Robot Takeover (For Real)
Writing by Evan Ackerman on Tuesday, 24 of November , 2009 at 12:07 am

Finally, a US President who shares my concerns… At a Washington DC school Barak Obama joined Sally Ride and the Mythbusters to check out a robot named the “Cougar Cannon,” designed by students from Oakton High School to gather and toss moon rocks… Or, until it gets to the moon, foam balls. Something about the robot seems to have alarmed him slightly:
“As president, I believe that robotics can inspire young people to pursue science and engineering. And I also want to keep an eye on those robots in case they try anything.”
I hereby nominate myself for anti-robot takeover czar.

The belief in robot takeovers is so misguided that its hard to know where to begin. For robots to genuinely take over would require levels of AI far more advanced than anything we have today, and a sophisticated manufacturing infrastructure which is able to operate indefinitely without any human supervision or maintenance.
There are dangers from human operated or human supervised telerobots, but telerobotics usually involves very little or no AI. There are also dangers of accidents as larger domestic robots become available, and as road vehicles are automated, but these can be dealt with using existing risk management methods.

Well, yeah. It’s a pop culture joke, really. Blame the Terminator movies.

Bob,
That’s what the robots want you to believe.
Evan and Co,
Here’s a link to a video of Obama’s comments. Good stuff at 1:51.

Wait, we’re trying to prevent the robot takeover? I must be in the wrong blog, I’ve been trying to start it.

We can’t even make computers that perform mindless repetitive tasks reliably, and that’s what they’re designed for. As if they’ll ever take over the world?

Barack Obama for me is the most charismatic president to be ever elected. He also makes great decisions, for example in the ecomomic stimulus package to counter the effects of recession.

You are all so terribly ill-informed.
I support Mr. Obama and Evan’s analysis of the AI/Nano-robot risk. And, I second Evan’s motion. We need an anti-AI/Robot take-over czar. Anyone who says otherwise is still living in the 20th century.
We DO, today, have AI that (if allowed to execute) may, at semi-low probability, improve on itself (that is WAY too high a risk, already). Once improved upon, it may, at high risk to humanity, impose it’s own version of justice upon the natural world, with virtual impunity.
I believe that the risk of nano, pico, and even just micro robotic Artificial Intelligence, coupled with the improvements in carbon tube and quantum computing, sets the perfect stage for Humanity’s shared worst nightmare.
And, do not assume for one minute that this is not already well into the development stage. We may just be talking about THE most powerful weapon-system ever imagined. Imagine a nano-robot team that can assemble itself into, say, a mobile high-power laser, anywhere the wind blows.
And, the idealistic (naive) bankers [not the responsible one's, who we should respect] and their irresponsible, unthinking, puppet politicians are intentionally pushing us toward this brink, for the purpose of creating chaos from which they will impose global governmental order (if they can ever regain any power from the AI). They believe we are dumb, violent, and careless. Let US prove them wrong, by doing what they will NOT.
Let us TALK about these things openly, and honestly, for it is the responsibility of the CITIZENS of a Democracy to impose the rules by which we will govern our collective actions. We will either rise to this occasion, and enlighten everyone to the reality we currently live within, or we will get what we deserve (which will be ultimate tyranny). It IS time.
“They” will all be safe and sound in their bunkers when all of this occurs, as they are risk-managers and understand what all of this means for a soft, squishy, vulnerable, human body.
Don’t get me started on time-manipulation technology and how they already know they will succeed to some small measure. (As unfortunate as that is for the gene pool and the balance of nature.) Because, that is the next reality awakening that will cause a paradigm-shift in the game of survival and law.
AI, quantum-computing, and nano-robotics are equally as high a military risk as, say, weapons of mass destruction, and SHOULD be classified AS SUCH. It is high time that we stop believing childish preclusions, and really begin regulating the very real risks to human safety, in this robotic/computational realm.
Realize, that most people won’t touch this subject with a ten-foot pole, because of the risks to profiteer’s and governmental repercussion. Powerful people make powerfully bad mistakes, and are all too often not held accountable to them, because everyone is so easily corrupted by their money. Do NOT allow your ethics to be co-opted.
We cannot afford any error in judgment, for the result of any misstep will result in the catastrophic and irreversible destruction of the very thread of life on Earth (and, perhaps, the Galaxy).
All the best luck in stopping the march of mankind into its Thanatos complex. Not even those at the top believe that any of you have what it takes to be responsible for yourselves and your decisions, because of your irresponsible lifestyles.
If you dare, try to wake up your neighbors to the truth of their irresponsible behavior, and you might have half of the courage it takes to talk about this subject in public. Until then, leave this discourse in the halls of responsible institutions. Most people can NOT handle this shock to their religious beliefs, and will not accept that mankind can use, and has used, science to create horrible risks to its own safety.
Best regards,
-Yung

Barack Obama is not only a charismatic president but he is a very intelligent and smart person too. I congratulate him for winning a Nobel Peace Prize.
