Robo-One Dance Competition Brings The Creepy

Writing by Evan Ackerman on Monday, 30 of November , 2009 at 4:21 am

Latest contender for the Uncanniest Robot of the Year Award (speaking of, I think we should have an Uncanniest Robot of the Year Award) is Doka Harumi, an entrant in the Robo-One dance competition during IREX on Saturday in Japan. Shockingly, shockingly, she didn’t win. I honestly can’t figure out why. It’s a robot/schoolgirl dancing to J-pop. In Japan. What, were there not enough tentacles or something? If you want to see the winner, you can click through at the end… It’s not nearly as impressive as some of the losers and the special guests. More vids, including an appearance by Manoi, after the jump.

It figures. Unless you give a Robot Girl tentacles, she just doesn’t have a chance….

Bear with me as I sound like a know-it-all. Yes it’s a shame that the first bot didn’t win. But it’s owner was REALLY aiming high. This is the dance that he was using as a program for it:

The servos you use make a big difference. I’ve seen that breakdancing bot online before. Had our first bot owner made his bot half the size, used the servos that the breakdancer owner used, and had not insisted on the uncanny valley look, he would have pulled it off. Her center of gravity was high, and her servos couldn’t respond to the command changes nearly fast enough.
Realistically, give that bot’s owner another year, and he could conceivably pull this off and win!

Just stick a fleshlight in the right spot, and you’re good to go! :(
