IREX 2009: Video

Writing by Evan Ackerman on Tuesday, 1 of December , 2009 at 3:12 am

We’re still kinda waiting on what I had expected to be a deluge of incredible robot videos from the International Robot Exhibition in Japan… I can only imagine that there is so much video that it’s taking forever for people to edit together and get up on the internets. Next year, I think y’all should chip in to send me to Japan, where I swear I’ll do nothing but post videos, but in the meantime, I’ve managed to dig up some interesting tidbits:

Robots cooperating to build LEGO cars:

ABB FlexPicker showing off:

There are two things that I specifically wanted to see on video based on the pictures from a few days ago. And I sort of found some footage… Sort of. Check it out, after the jump.

One of the things I really wanted to see is Motoman playing with LEGOs, but all I’ve got is this video of Motoman preparing to play with LEGOs at about 2 minutes in:

And there was also that robot that looked like it plays ping pong. Again, I found a video of it getting ready to play, but not actually playing:

I did a bit of research, though, and found a previous incarnation of the table tennis robot, which is named TOPIO, from IREX back in 2007:

Not the most impressive opponent, but robots have made gigantic strides when it comes to ball handling since then. Maybe not this particular robot… I guess we’ll have to just keep waiting and see.

If any of you guys happens to run across a good video from IREX, make sure and post a link in the comments.

We need to see an android equipped with those high-speed reflexes and hands!

Evan, set up a PayPal account for business purposes so you can draw on it for trips for research, and people can make donations that way.

That is, if you’re really serious about covering robotics overseas…… :-)

I am ABSOLUTELY serious about it, but at present, the BotJunkie travel budget is so far in the red that I can use it to change the channels on my TV :p

(Just kidding, we don’t actually have a travel budget)
