I own a Roomba and it served me well. It's all about convenience. Too bad it doesn't clean itself.
Pros:Its good on carpet, hardwood floors and tile floors.
Cons; Can get stuck, does not clean stairs, loud operation, loses charge quickly and side brush does not last!

Robot vacuums are a nice novelty, but if you have a cluttered floor to begin with (i.e., where the hell am I gonna put this stuff?) the machine is going to be limited in it's functionality. In that instance, most of us will want a bot from ReadyBot, which carries a Roomba within itself. Then it will also interact with your dish washer, clothes washer, and clothes dryer. As it's now 2010, I think we're approaching the "knee in the curve", so God willing, I'm gonna buy one of those as well!

I think you've forgotten one of the most important aspects of this announcement: Onboard this robot is an extremely low-cost laser rangefinder (by at least an order of magnitude compared to time-of-flight rangefinders). This type of sensor is commonplace on expensive research platforms; making them available at this price point could open up an entirely new era for hobby robotics.

If you're interested... the laser rangefinder inside the XV-11 were documented at a robotics conference (ICRA 2008). You can read more about it at Hizook.com
