I would thik that when the AI is able to make full use of a humanoid body, that would be great. But until then, specialist designs must be used when necessary. While the Mars Rover teams have been quite positive over the success that Spirit has had, you know at least one of them has secretly thought "Why didn't we put tractor treads on those buggars"! Space is still hit and miss, and the right design is going to be a best guess set up.

A human-operated world, and humans themselves: people would probably be more likely to interact better with a humanoid robot, and treat it as human (though it may not necessarily be an AI).

(I also saw this thing and thought of Daft Punk...)

With respect to space robots, I'm inclined to agree that humanoids are probably not going to be the best choice due to the highly specialized tasks that the environment and job demands. Generally speaking, however, I see humanoid robots as the robotic equivalent to the desktop computer; general purpose computers capable of being used for a very wide range of tasks.

Humanoid robots would be the most general purpose robots, capable of interacting with a human-operated world more than any other type of robot. They could sit in vehicles, operate machinery, navigate urban and natural environments, etc...

Unfortunately, I don't think the technology exists yet to make them practical as a general purpose robots. Hopefully robots like R2 will help push the tech forward.
