Hexapod Dance-Off 2010

Writing by Evan Ackerman on Wednesday, 5 of May , 2010 at 12:55 am

It’s that time of year again! The dancing hexapods are back for their annual competition of skill and style in Austria… I’m not sure who won, but my money is on the light-up disco ball, ’cause it’s shiny.

Another video, after the jump.

My vote’s gotta be for the turtle-bot… head-bobbing adds a lot to the dancing, I think.

I still don’t think I quite understand the fascination with robot dancing, though. Is it simply a way to show off the locomotive capabilities of the bots? Or is it something more sinister, like a lust for power (imagine a cowboy shooting at the feet of a rival, yelling “Dance boy, dance!”)?

I’m pretty sure that’s a competition held as part of a course in school, so the fascination may in fact be more with getting a good grade than with dancing robots themselves.

Forget “Robot Wars” I think the BBC should definitely consider a new television series “So you think your robot can dance?”. Great vids!
